Trad Climbing in a Gym?

Filed under: News — gavin @ 7:06 pm

“A work of art” profiles the newest, largest gym in Asia Camp 5. It’s nice to hear about a gym with 22 m walls, but it also has trad climbing wall where you can actually place pro. Now it’s a little hard to tell the trad wall would get boring because it doesn’t change, the accompany article “The craftsmen behind the walls” suggests there might be rotating circular panels that could offer more variety.

Climbing in Grain Silos

Filed under: News — gavin @ 6:51 pm

I’d heard about some climbing gyms set up in old grain silos. While a lot of times on the road, I’d see rocks and wonder if you can climb it. This guy sees grain silos and wonders if you can set up a gym in it.
Village considers wall-climbing gym
. So is climbing in a grain silo a good experience? There must be a lot of grain silos out there…

For some more gyms in grain silos, see OKC Rocks and Upper Limits.

x Climbs

“x Climbs” tracks the famous non-climbers who climb. Awhile ago I stumbled upon a picture of Forumula One racing great Michael Schumacher climbing, but sadly, I can’t find it. Instead, here’s an article that lists Schumacher activities while recovering from a flu during the racing season (did I misread that article?): Schumi ready to continue. Also check out the funny expression on his face.

If you ever thought about starting a climbing gym…

Filed under: News — gavin @ 9:29 pm

here’s something else to think about. I thought I read it all on the threads on rockclimbing.com; it doesn’t sound like it’s a great business opportunity (sigh). Even if you can find enough investors to cover the costs of building a wall, the ongoing operating costs for liability insurance and maintenance mean you’ll need to generate a lot of monthly income through membership and guests.

And after you think you’re running a pretty good gym, things can still derail you. You need to register to read the article on the juneauempire.com, but all you need to know are these two words: Property Tax.

Extreme Idaho

Maybe when I blog more, these bits won’t seem as interesting, but check out the Extreme Idaho climbing news clip. They show all the gear required (and store it in a shopping cart) and the wall has a pretty good looking roof section.

Although you might be tempted to make fun of the title “Extreme Idaho,” at least they cover Sumo too.

Donating your outdoor gear to Pakistan

Filed under: News — gavin @ 9:37 am

Climbers in the Seattle area organize a donation drive for outdoor gear to help aid the Pakistani’s efforts to recover from the big earthquake in October of 2005. See the following Seattle Times article for more information: Climbers want your old gear to aid Pakistan. Ed Viesters explained that the villages have crumbled, leaving many families freezing at the 10,000 ft elevation. Also, see more info about the relief effort from the American Alpine Club.
