You gotta climb!

Short Water Solo: Climbing and pools!

Filed under: News — gavin @ 7:34 am

Sadness, you can’t climb out of the pool yet in Milwaukee, because the State balks at approving climbing wall. Otherwise, it would have been great. You could have started climbing out of the pool and tried some crazy dynos before landing safely into the water. I don’t know how many diving boards there are at pools now, but it looks like Aquaclimb might be the next best thing.

You could try advertising. But check out how a South African climbing gym CityRock does it in: CityROCK climbs to new heights with ad campaign. You could try that for your local gym too if you agreed to model for free and be naked.

The Nerd Version of Rock Climbing Summer Camp

Filed under: News — gavin @ 11:49 am

It sounds a little funny.
Climbing high with math
tells us about a new summer camp where they learn about science and math skills through climbing. They’ll chart how long it takes to climb a wall, etc. They could probably do that with swimming or any other sport. But at least they’re doing it for a good reason: the local community was worried about the low test scores in the area so they needed to try something new.

Verve

Filed under: News — gavin @ 5:32 pm

It seems like there’s so much climbing apparel now, it’s a little hard to keep track. The article “Verve finds niche in climbing apparel” helps a little bit. While a company like Prana also makes climbing and yoga clothes, Verve produces clothes locally, sewn by grannies!

Which reminds me, I have another article about seniors to post. They sew, they climb, they have plenty of stories to tell.

Rock Crawling

Filed under: News, Look — gavin @ 5:15 pm

Rock Crawling doesn’t sound too hard, but if you’re trying to crawl up a rock in a 4×4, it’s much more difficult. I read about it when this article about rock crawling showed up in my newsfeed:Goldendale rocks draw top crawlers”.

For fun, I’ve added a video clip I found on google video. It show there are many similarities between rock climbing and rock crawling, including the woots of encouragement, long periods of time with little movement, and lots of rocks.

There’s also a sport called RC Rock Crawling, which uses RC cars and smaller rocks.

Climbing’s not scary

Filed under: News — gavin @ 6:10 pm

Seniors are a hoot, especially ones that rock climb. Jerry Dodgen sounds like someone you’d have to meet: At 75, senior says rock climbing less scary than a nursing home”. The article’s really fun to read, but there’s a bit about carabiners pounded into the wall that doesn’t sound like the reporter quite got it.

Captain Fun Hog and Man Law

Filed under: News — gavin @ 4:20 pm

Here’s a great article about what Aron Ralston’s up to now: New Heights. If you hadn’t noticed (I didn’t either), he’s in the “Man Law” commercials from Miller Lite. He’s been busy making speaking engagements that take him to fun places, getting outdoors of course, and training to climb K2.
