Trip Ideas

Filed under: News — gavin @ 11:29 pm

If you’re thinking about making a month+ long trip, you might follow what this former teacher did — go to Spain and South America. Read about what happened when he got lost, it sounds like he enjoyed it in “The route less traveled.”

Women Learn Skills

Filed under: News — gavin @ 7:25 pm

There have been a few articles lately about climbing workshops for women, and I don’t think they were inspired by The Descent. The article Discarding the male has a good point: that women might not have a chance to learn technique in mixed gender groups, since the men might want to just fire up a route.

Tree Climbing

Filed under: News — gavin @ 7:13 pm

There’s a nearly two-page article about tree climbing that’s pretty interesting. In “His skills are at a high level”, you learn about the Tree Climbing Champion Mark Chisholm. He’s a 3rd-generation arborist and can spend several days up in tall trees using chain-saws amongst the branches and power lines! The comps sound pretty interesting too, with events in aerial rescue, work climb, footlock, and speed climb!

Businessweek covers Patagonia

Filed under: News — gavin @ 10:53 pm

In a
A Passion For The Planet
, Businessweek leads with an MBA (two MBAs apparently) who decides to work for Patagonia after reading Let My People Go Surfing. It’s a pretty good summary of what makes Patagonia a company that is great at what they do and provides an incredible work environment. But it skips a lot of Yvon Chouinard’s perspective, so it doesn’t quite capture the feel of responsibility he feels to the workers (like starting up a childcare center), nor the planet.

Why the rope broke

Filed under: News — gavin @ 7:38 am

Black Diamond’s QC with KP has the final results of the Rope Breakage analysis. Looks like there were chemicals involved, but how they got on the rope has some interesting and scary speculation. Read the whole report, check your rope, and where your rope is stored.

More Rock Climbing and Math

Filed under: News — gavin @ 6:14 pm

Teachers must really want rock climbing walls in the gym.
In Climbing wall installed at Spearfish Middle School, they said the new 10′ x 60′ wide wall could be used for math drills, including solving a problem that’s written on a route before you can attempt it. How about figuring out the cost of the rock climbing wall, how many kids the rope could hold, or how many times you could take a whipper before breaking the rope?

The Jim Collins on Charlie Rose episode that I blogged about previously is now on Google video! Check it out and hear him talk about climbing, business, and great societies. There’s a fun portion where he talks about climbing and the different hand grips.
