I’m a big fan of the show and I wish I read this article before I was in central Texas for a week. Instead, I missed out on a few of the stars’ hangouts and a Barack Obama visit. Read the article Austin charms ‘Friday Night Lights’ cast and you’ll find out that the coach’s daughter (Aimee Teegarden) is not only almost as old as the actress’ age, but she also climbs at the Main Event.

He stopped by the San Francisco gym Mission Cliffs in February to take the belay safety course with his kids. Pretty cool, you could see world class climbers there, or world class comedians (sometimes).

Good to Great on TV, with climbing

Good to Great is now on TV. (Here’s the SF schedule). It feels like a PBS documentary, but has a pretty good story about the Dallas Police and their Level Five Leader chief of police (he looked at his shoes when first introduced to the mayor.) There are a few clips of Jim Collins bouldering indoors and outdoors.

‘Lost’ Actress Nearly Died While Mountain Climbing This Year retells a story Evangeline Lilly reveals on The Ellen Degeneres show. She was climbing Mount Baker and while sliding down the descent, partially fell in a crevice. Does that climbing safety study help put things in perspective?

Hmmm, Alley Baggett rock climbs. Here’s a cute safe-for-work photo of her: Alley and John. Warning, any other photo search for her probably will turn up stuff that isn’t. (She’s a former Playboy model, Entertainment tonight correspondent, and has appeared in some music videos.) Can’t believe what some searches turn up. She’s also a speaker for hire and inspired a short-lived (one issue) comic book, Alleycat.

I think the sources of these articles are more interesting than hearing about these people who climb. Guiness, the Phillipines, who else wants to mention rock climbing?

Fascinating Facts and Figures from Guinness (get ready for St. Patrick’s day!) tells us that one of the “That 70′s show” stars climbs. I think we saw him at Red Rocks once. Or maybe it was some other young star…

Matthew McConaughey plays an adventous guy in “Failure to Launch.” Most of the clippings say his character rock climbs, like this piece

The President of South Korea climbs! Climbing With Roh shows a photo of him holding a press conference after climbing (hiking?). Read this profile of Roh to learn more about his impeachment, where he spent a lot of time reading and hiking. I wouldn’t mind seeing photos of Bush hiking if…

(I have some celebrity climbing bits coming, they just weren’t as exciting.)

The Bachelor Rock Climbs?

Shoot, I have to link to ExtraTv. They report that the bachelor‘s rock-solid body can be attributed to his rock climbing. Although the video link looks like a naughtier kind of climbing porn, it’s not very topless. It’s worth watching mainly if you’re curious about the climbing at Chelsea Piers. I remember wanting to go when I visited New York, but they were unclear on the phone about whether a day pass let you climb or if you needed to pay extra.

More Jim Collins

I’m not sure why another Jim Collins article came my way, but I’m not complaining.

Picking the Right People covers a bit about rock climbing, “Good to Great”, and business school. It’s not too different from some of other pieces linked in the previous post, but it help me think more about the subject.

I wasn’t sure that I agreed his “first who” principle applied to life and the social sector. His research on businesses showed pretty clearly that deep management teams are very important for transforming a good business into a great one. But his climbing example is too obvious. I care more about climbing with people I trust than which routes I climb. I don’t mind if people don’t want to climb with me because they think I’m fruit loops.

I wondered about how we reach a great society. To find the “what” we’re missing in a great society, do we focus on first who or first what?

It could be a people problem — we don’t have enough people who spend time actively building a great society — so we do need to focus on who first. It could be a what problem — we could solve the problems in society with the people we have, we just need to approach them in better ways.

I’ll need to read Collins’ monograph to see how he arrived at his thoughts and how he describes what a great society is.
